NBA players doing a Beckham???

After a decade in the NBA, unrestricted free agent Earl Boykins has joined the growing legion of veteran role players unable to resist the lure of European riches.
Boykins' Cleveland-based agent, Mark Termini, announced Tuesday that Boykins has signed a one-year contract with Italy's Virtus Bologna. The deal, according to Termini, is worth more than $3.5 million for the 2008-09 season, which would make the 5-foot-5 guard Italy's highest-paid player.Since free agency began July 1, Boykins is the ninth player who worked in the NBA last season to bypass the tight free-agent market for role players at home and head overseas. Yet he's just the third -- following Josh Childress and Carlos Arroyo -- who played almost exclusively in the NBA before considering interest from abroad.

AND THERE'S MORE....

Source: LeBron James would consider European offer of $50M a year or more. A person close to James said Tuesday that the Cavaliers' superstar would strongly consider playing overseas if he was offered a salary of "around $50 million a year." The source close to James said LeBron would play in Europe only for a year or two before returning to the NBA. He said James would view it as an opportunity to popularize the game and himself overseas. He added that James would not consider himself to be playing in the "minor leagues." REPORT: FAVRE CLOSE TO BEING DEALT TO BUCS

The Brett Favre saga could be coming to a long-awaited conclusion, as various news sources report that the veteran NFL quarterback is close to being traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Also, a source close to Favre told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that although Favre's trade to Tampa Bay was not yet completed, the signs were definitely pointed in that direction. The teams still have to agree on compensation, while the paper added that the New York Jets were not out of the running for Favre's services.
A trade to the Bucs would reunite Favre with head coach Jon Gruden, who was an assistant with the Packers during Favre's first three seasons in Green Bay. The team also runs the West Coast offense with which Favre is familiar, and has the $12 million in salary cap space to add his salary

LA Galaxy is fallen apart

According to my sources and media outlets, Tim Leiweke is close to firing both GM Alexi Lalas and manager Ruud Gullit. Several players of the team's roster is likely to quit at the end of the season.

For me the problem is, AEG is looking at building a superstar side, but the thing is they can't afford to bring them to LA because of the salary cap. MLS if they want to improve the quality of the league, have to raise the salary cap and roster spots in order to see LA Galaxy really be the flagship franchise of the Major League Soccer. The way things goes now in Los Angeles, MLS might want to expand but they have to look at their GIANT franchise.

Milan face battle to land Drogba

AC Milan have opened talks over the summer transfer of Didier Drogba from Chelsea. The Italian club's sports general manager, Ariedo Braida, met two of Drogba's representatives in a Paris hotel on Tuesday to discuss Milan's reinforcement plans. But any transfer could depend on whether the Italian club qualify for next season's Champions League.
Braida informed them that Milan intended to buy Ronaldinho from Barcelona, bring Andriy Shevchenko back from Chelsea and sign Drogba as a principle centre-forward. Salary was not discussed, although Milan are expected at least to match the Ivorian's current weekly wage of around £90,000.
However, Milan are two points outside the Champions League places, a gap that would be increased to five with two games left were they to lose today's home derby with leaders Inter while Fiorentina won at struggling Cagliari.
Milan, who were last season's European champions, were eliminated from this year's tournament by Arsenal. They face a trip to mid-table Napoli and a home game against Udinese - who are chasing a Uefa Cup spot - in their last two matches. Fiorentina face games against two more teams battling relegation, at home to Parma then away to Torino on the last day of the campaign.
Drogba, who scored twice in last week's Champions League semi-final defeat of Liverpool, resolved to leave Chelsea after their dismissal of José Mourinho in September. He has told friends that he believes he will be permitted to join another club and has allowed some of his feelings for current manager Avram Grant to become clear. The striker opened a recent column for French magazine Sport with the words: 'Don't ask me what I think of Grant. It's better for everybody if I keep quiet.'
Two other sides who have definitely qualified for next season's Champions League are in the running to sign the 30-year-old: Spanish league leaders Real Madrid and Inter, provided Mourinho agrees to replace Roberto Mancini as the Serie A club's coach.
Grant has been unable to guarantee Drogba's presence at the club next season. On Friday the Chelsea manager said: 'There are a lot of rumours about everybody. Didier can only play for one club, but he's been linked to six or seven. He's at the club. Sometimes he has good days, sometimes he has bad days. Most of the time, you have to give answers to questions like this on the pitch. In the semi-finals, he was good.'
Meanwhile, despite Avram Grant's disclosure that Roman Abramovich called to congratulate him following Chelsea's defeat of Liverpool in last week's Champions League semi-final his job is still not safe, according to a Stamford Bridge executive.
The source also claimed that the Russian billionaire had been absent from many of Chelsea's recent games because he was 'unhappy with the club's results'. 'He is happier now, of course,' the source said. 'But it is still unclear what will happen regarding Grant's future. Mr Abramovich was not present on Wednesday for two reasons. The first is because he was in Moscow due to the changing political situation. But he has also been unhappy at the form of the team.' Saints close to getting Shockey from Giants

FOXSports.com has learned that New Orleans early this week offered the Giants a second-round pick in today's draft as well as either a sixth-rounder this year or a fifth in 2009 to get the deal sealed. Despite reports to the contrary, the deal has been on the table for quite some time and remains available today.

The Cowboys and Titans have a deal in place that would send the oft-troubled cornerback and return specialist to Dallas in exchange for a 4th-round pick at this Saturday's draft, sources told FOXSports.com. If Jones is reinstated and plays for the Cowboys this year, then Dallas will also send a 6th-round pick to Tennessee in 2009.

Also, Falcons sources said that they will select Matt Ryan in the No. 3 spot, should he still be available. Injury concerns with Glenn Dorsey turned Atlanta away from the LSU defensive tackle.

Why Not in Great White North???

Every week I'm listening to several radio shows in Montreal and TV shows in North America and everybody is saying that MLS should expand to soccer-traditional cities such as Montreal, St.Louis, Miami and others.
Speaking about Montreal, several sources are telling me that Mr.Saputo, who is the owner of USL's Montreal Impact is desperate to get into MLS but would love to get another financial force into his side. Here comes George Gillett, owner of Liverpool F.C. and the Montreal Canadiens.

But the question I'm asking myself, wouldn't it be safe to create a Canadian Premier League in concert with the Canadian Soccer Association to help develop the sport in the country, instead of putting all the money into a league that is not even based in Canada???
With teams in Montreal ,Quebec City,Vancouver's USL side, Ottawa, London, Halifax, Niagara and other cities in Canada and even Toronto FC coming into the group, it could be possible to put all the money into a league that could help built a powerhouse in the Concacaf region like the MLS did it with the US soccer federation.
With the creation of the CPL, the possibility of more entrances in the CONCACAF Champions League for Canada is something that could be attracting for canadian teams because it could represent more money, media coverage and sponsorships opportunities.
With a league in Canada, it means more canadian players plying their trades in Europe and around the world would come there and gain more money if there's a respectable salary echelon. It also means that several young players instead of going to Europe, they could stay close to their families and still perform at a great level and practice the sport that they love.

So I'm throwing you guys the idea it is to you to discuss it. Send me your comments, so we could debate it.

Next Winter Classic

We've just finish watching the 2008 Winter Classic at Ralph Wilson Stadium between Pittsburgh and Buffalo. Several other teams across the league would love to host this kind of event. Detroit, Toronto, Philadelphia and Montreal are looking at hosting it at bigger venues. Detroit at Ford Field, Toronto at Rogers Centre or BMO Field, Philadelphia at Lincoln Financial Field and Montreal at Molson or Olympic Stadium. It would be fun to see the 08-09 All Star Game in Montreal at the Olympic or Molson Stadium or a regular-season game there.
